A FEASIBILITY study on a decaying chapel has come up with three options for improvement.
HLB Architects of Durham was commissioned by Middlesbrough Borough Council to carry out the survey on Acklam Chapel of Remembrance, in Acklam Cemetery.
It was built in 1930, and is currently used to house books of remembrance and vases for flowers, but has fallen into disrepair.
The study, which will be discussed by the bereavement services forum at a meeting tomorrow,(cor) finds the building lacking in disabled access, security, health and safety and conservation standards, aesthetic and devotional requirements and layout.
It identifies as urgent repairs to roof tiles and lead flashing, pres-ervative treatment to the roof, and rising damp in the toilets.
The first suggested improvement scheme involves leaving the building intact, but adding redesigned book cabinets, new flower stands, relocated seating, carpeting, redecoration, subtler lighting and better heating.
In the second, the prayer room would be enlarged, and the third also incorporates a larger prayer room, adding a separate book room.
