HIGHWAY chiefs say there are no plans to alter or replace a road sign which has been spelt wrong for the past 20 years.
The sign, on the approach to the Haughton Road roundabout in Darlington, directs motorists to "Teeside".
A spokesman for Darlington Borough Council said the sign was a throwback to the days when there was confusion over the way Teesside was spelt.
He said: "Durham County will have put it up there when Teesside came about as a place. There was a bit of confusion as to whether it was one 's' or two and later it sometimes appeared with a hyphen."
He said: "It's not one of the major directional signs and it's not causing anybody any problems. It's not as if it's causing travellers any confusion, so it's just been left there for 20 years or so.
