AN Army student from Darlington has returned from a trip to Africa where she helped to build a well.
Naomi Robinson, 21, went to the aid of the Nabakoss villagers in east Uganda after she and her friends at the Tayforth University Army Officer Training Corps decided that they should spend their summer break doing something worthwhile.
A well project was started by a charity in the early 1990s, but was abandoned before completion.
The students spent three weeks building the well after trip co-ordinators Sergeant Dave Balmer and Officer Cadet Rob Agnew arranged for the team to help the Busoga Trust charity.
The well can now pump 600 litres of water per hour and will provide water for between 300 and 800 people.
"The locals were drinking water from the wells that was a serious hazard to their health," said Naomi.
"Just by looking down the well you could see how filthy it was. There can be no doubt we have made a difference."
