A MAN underwent 11 hours of surgery after sustaining a broken neck and a fractured cheekbone and jaw in a mugging.
The 45-year-old victim is still in Middlesbrough General Hospital, where he is described as stable, following the assault last Tuesday.
It happened when he was walking along Westbourne Grove, in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, just after midnight.
He was attacked by youths who punched and kicked him about the head and body, before making off with just £5 and personal items.
Following the initial surgery, the man is expected to need further treatment to his jaw.
Three youths, two aged 16 and a 17-year-old, have been arrested and charged with robbery. They appeared at Teesside Youth Court on Saturday, and have been remanded in custody.
Witnesses should contact (01642) 303118.
