POLICE investigating an incident in which a shot was fired at the cab of a freight train have received fresh information.
Following inquiries into the incident, which happened between Thornaby depot, Teesside and Boulby Potash Mine, in east Cleveland, British Transport Police believe it may have involved someone in the Brotton area.
The train left Thornaby at 6.40pm on September 18, and when the driver changed to the cab at the opposite end, he discovered a bullet had penetrated it.
Detective Sergeant Alan Darlington, of British Transport Police, said: "We cannot really determine whether it was deliberate or not, but if it was deliberate, it was a serious act.
"We do know that people with firearms have been seen in the Brotton area on the railway lines.
"We want to make people aware of the danger of using firearms near railways. In this case, the driver could have been seriously injured."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police on 0800 405040.
