FOOTPATHS in east Cleveland closed because of the foot-and-mouth crisis look likely to be reopened.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council said it had received the go-ahead from the Government to reopen paths in the eastern part of the borough.
Only three rights of way, on a small area south-east of Scaling Dam, on the A171 Teesside to Whitby road, must remain closed, because of the protection zone drawn up after the outbreak of the disease in the Esk Valley.
Paths in the western and coastal parts of the borough were reopened in July, but Government vets recommended against a total re-opening.
Now further advice from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will allow the council to reopen paths in the remainder of the borough.
There will be a phased programme, starting on Monday, with the majority of paths open a week later.
