CHEFS in a Middlesbrough hotel have beaten off competition from more than 60 hotels and guest houses in the North to clinch a hygiene award.
Kitchen staff at the Thistle Hotel in Middlesbrough were grilled with hygiene questions by experts, and went on to win the Pride of Northumbria Hygiene award.
Hotels and guest houses from North Yorkshire to the Scottish borders took part in the competition.
Judges inspected kitchens thoroughly for hygiene standards and tested staff on their expertees before giving the Thistle first prize.
The hotel, which has four kitchen porters and eight chefs, does banquets for up to 400 people and has an American/Italian coffee shop, open during the day. The chefs also cook for the hotel's Genghis restaurant, which does Asian and Mediterranean food.
Head chef Richard Howell was "over the moon" with his kitchen team and the first prize place. Hygiene inspectors suggested the team entered the award after routine checks on the kitchen.
