ARTWORK from the other side of the world is about to enliven a North-East gallery.
A five-week exhibition has opened at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle, on the art of the Japanese picture book, alongside an education programme dubbed Eastern Puzzles.
The free event is co-hosted by Tyneside's Centre for the Children's Book.
Children from Newcastle's St Cuthbert's High and Stocksfield Avenue Primary have been joined by Hurworth Comprehensive, near Darlington, Nenthead School, Alston; Blaydon St Joseph Primary, Gateshead, and King Edward Primary, North Shields, to work with Japanese artist Noriko Takahashi on displays.
Ten more schools are taking part in half-day residences and visitors can enjoy working with Japanese artists and half-term story-making sessions.
On Saturdays and at half-term, a Kamishibai storyteller will tour the streets of Newcastle.
Through Eastern Eyes: the art of the Japanese picture book and Eastern Puzzles runs from today until November 3. Opening hours are weekdays 10am to 5.30pm; Saturday 10am to 4.30pm. Admission is free.
