TWO MEN were killed when a car smashed into a bus shelter they were stood under, sending the concrete roof crashing down onto them.
Ernie Wilkinson, 54, and 28-year-old Michael Logan were both crushed when a 26-year-old woman lost control of her Seat Cordoba and ploughed into the bus stop in East Rainton, near Durham, on Saturday morning.
Mr Logan, of East Rainton, died after throwing himself across his seven-year-old stepson Craig to protect him as the heavy roof crashed down.
Mr Wilkinson, also of East Rainton, was taken, with the other dead man, to the University Hospital of North Durham, where they were both pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver has been questioned by police and has been bailed pending further enquiries.
