Brian Clough today told Sven Goran Eriksson - you should have picked Kevin Phillips.
The football legend said the Sunderland hitman, 28, was the best striker to fill injured Michael Owen's boots as England gear up to tackle Greece.
Eriksson has called up veteran Tottenham skipper Teddy Sheringham for Saturday's crunch World Cup clash at Old Trafford.
But Clough said Phillips was better than Liverpool duo Robbie Fowler and Emile Heskey.
He told the Daily Express: "Phillips is among the top three or four strikers in the country.
"Somebody has got it wrong.
"Phillips is as good, if not better, than Fowler and Heskey and is definitely in much better form."
Eriksson has also drafted in West Ham winger Trevor Sinclair while amazingly bringing back Arsenal defender Martin Keown.
The England squad: Seaman (Arsenal), Martyn (Leeds), Wright (Arsenal), G Neville (Man Utd), P Neville (Man Utd), Mills (Leeds), Carragher (Liverpool), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Keown (Arsenal), Ehiogu (Middlesbrough), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Rio Ferdinand (Leeds), Gerrard (Liverpool), Murphy (Liverpool), Beckham (Man Utd), Scholes (Man Utd), Sinclair (West Ham), Barmby (Liverpool), McManaman (Real Madrid), Sheringham (Tottenham), Andy Cole (Man Utd), Fowler (Liverpool), Heskey (Liverpool).
