BOY, 11, BADLY INJURED IN CRASH: POLICE appealed for information last night after a road accident that left an 11-year-old boy with serious head injuries.

Andrew Jobling, of Balfour Street, Gateshead, was treated at Newcastle General Hospital after the incident, on Friday night. Police said a collision took place involving a Fiat Panda car in Field House Road, Gateshead. Anyone with information is asked to contact 0191-454 7555.

LANDINGS DOWN: Fish landings have slumped at two North Yorkshire harbours, according to new figures. Scarborough borough harbourmaster, Captain Bill Estill, said the value of landings at Whitby in the period from April to August dropped from just under £2m two years ago to £1.4m this year, and the weight was down from 1.3m kilos to 820,000 kilos. At Scarborough, the drop was even greater - down from £1.9m in 1999 to £954,503 this year.

RSPCA MOURNS: Ernest Temple, an RSPCA inspector in North Yorkshire for 40 years and the inspiration for one of the characters in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, has died at the age of 92. Mr Temple, of West Street, Scarborough, covered much of the county as an inspector.

SHARE AUCTION: A £25 share certificate issued in 1858 for the Stockton and Darlington Railway is expected to fetch up to £600 when it is auctioned by Phillips, in London, on Thursday. A worldwide club for collectors of old share certificates - the International Bond and Share Society - was set up in 1878 and is run in England by Peter Duppa-Miller.

ON THE RUN: The Richmond Castle Run, in North Yorkshire, has been planned a little earlier this year. The event will be held on Sunday, October 21, with entries accepted until a week before. Anyone over 15 can enter the six-mile run, with entry fees charged at £6 for British Athletic Federation members and £7 to all others. Entry forms are available by telephoning (01748) 824898.

NEW POST: The Reverend Bob Jackson, vicar of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, for the past nine years, is leaving to take up a new post with the Springboard Initiative in Evangelism, which has been set up by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.
