AMBULANCE response times across the Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service have improved by 20 per cent, thanks to a major campaign.

The service was achieving 55 per cent of Category A life-threatening calls in eight minutes before June, but now it is achieving 76 per cent.

This beats the Government's 75 per cent target and puts the service among the best in the country.

The improvement was achieved through changes including acting on staff suggestions, recruiting more front-line staff, updating mapping software and installing satellite navigation systems.

Chief executive Trevor Molton said: "Our patients rightly deserve this result and it's given the service, with every justification, a new sense of pride.

"We've invested in extra resources in Teesside in particular, and are talking about extra funding for North Yorkshire and the East Riding."
