A sculpture inspired by the imagination of children will be unveiled as the centrepiece of a revamped park this week.
Windvane will be the first large sculpture created in Gateshead since the Angel of the North in 1998, and will be visible for miles around.
The 10m sculpture, which will be unveiled in Windmill Hills Town Park on Friday, will be topped by a large stainless steel sculpted windvane that will move to point the wind's direction.
Windmill Hills Town Park was Gateshead's first urban park. Originally built in 1861, it has been rejuvenated as part of a development of the former St Cuthbert's village site. Late last year, pupils from Windmill Hills Community Primary School, in Bensham, helped artist Richard Wood to design models on the themes of wind and weather.
Richard spent two days at the school preparing ideas with pupils, who then took part in workshop sessions.
