A COUNCIL is seeking support in calling time on outdoor drinking.
Councillor Ken Walker, the leader of Middlesbrough Council, has written to all 53 council members asking them to let him know which areas they think would benefit from a ban on drinking in public places.
He is extending the invitation for suggestions to other organisations and the public.
The move follows the Government's decision to give local authorities new powers to bring in drink-free zones, which Coun Walker is keen for Middlesbrough to take advantage of.
He said: "I imagine every member of the council has had experience of how strongly the public feels about this issue, and what problems it can cause.
"In many instances, people's ability to obtain alcohol for consumption in places such as shopping areas and community facilities can turn them into virtually no-go areas for decent members of the public, and there has to be concern about the number of young people who indulge in this activity."
