AN exhibition for County Durham carers will be opened by TV agony aunt and writer Denise Robertson.
The event is being staged by Durham County Council at County Hall, Durham City, next Thursday, from 10am to 4pm.
It will feature displays, presentations and practical advice for people who look after a sick, disabled or elderly relative or friend.
There are 1,300 registered carers in the county, but it is estimated the true number could be as high as 50,000 and there is concern they may feel isolated and are unaware of the help and information available.
Peter Kemp, the authority's director of social services, said: "This exhibition offers invaluable advice and support for carers and their families.
"In addition, a wide range of organisations will be exhibiting, highlighting the complex needs of carers.
"This will allow organisations to share information and increase awareness of what is on offer to carers in County Durham."
The vital role of carers will be recognised with the presentation of the Carers Echo Award. The Carers Echo is a quarterly newsletter available free to everyone on the carers' register, which is the database of all carers in the county.
Barbara Hughes, council project worker for the register, said: "This new award is in recognition of the vital role of carers who face an enormous amount of difficulties."
The award is funded by the council's social services department and is intended for carers who do not receive a salary.
