A STEWARD was left badly shaken when two robbers made off with his club's weekend takings.

The raiders took a large sum of cash from Blackhall Working Men's Club, in east Durham, on Monday morning.

The pair, wearing black balaclavas, went into the club in Cemetery Road at about 8.40am and confronted the 56-year-old steward in his office, pushing him to the floor and threatening him.

One of the robbers carried what appeared to be a firearm, the other brandished a wooden pole up to 3ft long.

They took the money in three cash bags, one black, one blue and the other thought to be red.

Detectives believe they escaped in a vehicle but last night did not know what make it was.

The steward was badly shaken but otherwise unhurt.

Both robbers are said to be at least 20, well built and with local accents.

The one with the firearm was about 6ft and wore a waist-length black nylon coat.

His accomplice is 5ft 9ins and wore a blue nylon jacket with white stripes on the sleeves.

Acting Detective Inspector Peter Constantine, of Peterlee CID, said: "We believe there were a lot of people in the area at the time and obviously we are keen to hear from anyone who might have seen these two men going into or leaving the premises. We would also be interested to hear from anyone who saw a car or other vehicle leaving the area at about 8.45am.''
