SINN Fein president Gerry Adams is to make a public appearance in a North Yorkshire market town.
It is believed to be the first time he has made a speech outside London on mainland Britain.
The controversial republican politician will give the annual Joan Maynard Memorial Lecture in Thirsk Town Hall on Friday, October 12.
Miss Maynard lived in nearby Sowerby and was a parish and county councillor for the area for many years, as well as serving as Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside for 13 years. She died of cancer in 1998, aged 76.
In previous years, the committee set up to arrange lectures in her memory has had former Labour minister and friend Tony Benn as a speaker.
But this year's choice is proving controversial in the town, made famous as the home of vet-turned-author James Herriot.
Coun Mark Robson, chairman of the town hall management committee, said: "I am concerned, given the political unrest around the world and current sensitivity, whether this is a good time for this to go ahead."
But Don Cartridge, a member of the lecture organising committee, said it was great news for the town.
"Gerry Adams was a friend of Joan - she was very interested in the Irish question," he said. "We are honoured that he has decided to come along. It's a mark of respect for Joan."
He added that entry to the lecture would be strictly by ticket only. Anyone wanting a ticket, priced £5, should contact Bob Duffy on (01642) 244200.
