VILLAGERS in East Durham are being invited to take a step down memory lane at a one- day exhibition, next week.

The event, being held at Shotton Colliery Library next Thursday, will feature old photographs of the village, a video and slide shows.

There will also be a display of Age Concern's React, Recall library.

The event is being staged by Shotton Colliery History Group, which was formed last year after Age Concern Durham County held a discussion group that looked at the way of life in the village 50 years ago.

The exhibition, which iscalled Down Memory Lane, will be opened at 10am by Allen Dobson, chairman of Age Concern Durham County, and will run until 3.30pm.

Slide shows will be shown at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

A member of the history group, Walter Spink, said: "This is a good opportunity for local residents to come along and see some of the village's history.

"We hope to build upon this event and eventually visit local residential care homes and schools to share some of these memories."

Anyone who wants to book free transport to the event should call Kathleen Young at Age Concern on 0191-527 2359 before 4pm on Tuesday, next week.

The exhibition is being funded by Durham County Council's Tomorrow's History programme.
