YOUNG people can net themselves some basketball skills in a new course in Hartlepool.

The ten-week course will pave the way for a new junior basketball league, which starts in the town next month.

The course starts on October 12 and will take place every Friday at Rossmere Youth Centre from 4pm to 5pm. It is open to girls and boys aged 12 to 14 and the course costs £10.

Suzanne Clark, young people's sports development officer, said: "This is a great opportunity for young people in the town to get involved in a different sport which is a lot of fun. Anyone who hasn't tried basketball before need not worry because beginners will be very welcome, and the atmosphere will be friendly and relaxed."

The sports team has been working closely with Hartlepool Hornets Basketball club and has developed a junior section for youngsters aged 14 to 16, which meets every Monday in the sports hall at Brinkburn Youth Centre, from 4.30pm to 6pm.
