FRIENDS of a teenager who collapsed and died on a football pitch have raised £500 for a memorial.
The close-knit community of Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, was devastated when Anthony Wilkinson, 15, died of a heart attack in August.
Only that morning, the Gillbrook Technology College pupil, of St Patrick's Road, Grangetown, had received a date for an operation to correct a leaking heart valve.
Following his death at Grangetown Park, many of his friends kept a vigil there and laid a carpet of flowers. Now they have raised enough money to erect a permanent tribute.
Les Earl, vice-chairman of the Grangetown Residents' Association, said: "They have got £500 that came from going round with buckets on the day of Picnic in the Park, and a £225 donation from the haulier David Fox.
"We have already had some discussions with the kids and about half a dozen are really keen on having a bench in the park overlooking the football pitch.
"Because Anthony was a Boro supporter, they are talking about having Boro engraved on it and perhaps a photograph."
Mr Earl said the plans will be discussed at a meeting today, after which he will make inquires about having the bench made. He said: "We want something that will last a very long time."
