TWO men accused of wielding weapons including a poker, coal shovel and walking stick during an attack were yesterday found guilty.

The jury at Teesside Crown court delivered guilty verdicts on Paul Robinson, 27, who was accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Thomas Jones, who was attacked in June last year.

Mr Robinson, of Steam Mill Cottages, Easington, east Durham, had denied the allegation.

He was standing trial at Teesside Crown Court, alongside Alan Atkinson, who faced the same charge. Mr Atkinson, 25, of Hazel Crescent, Easington, also denied the attack. He had already admitted a charge of assaulting Mr Jones' friend, Thomas Swinbourne.

Two other men, Johnathan McGann, 25, of George Avenue, and Leslie Henderson, 27, of Bradley Street, both Easington, had previously admitted the offence.

The case against all four men was adjourned for the preparation of pre-sentence reports and the judge, Recorder John Muir warned all sentencing options were open, including custody.

Atkinson and Robinson were remanded on conditional bail.

The court heard the prosecution claim that Mr Robinson and Mr Atkinson were among a group involved in an attack on Mr Jones, after an argument broke out between two groups of friends in Easington on the night of England's Euro 2000 football match with Germany.
