THE former face of a world-famous toffee manufacturer has died at the age of 102.

Alice Scott was the first model to advertise for Chester-le-Street confectioners Dainty Dinah more than 80 years ago.

Her face adorned dozens of posters all over the region as she became one of the North-East's most recognisable faces.

The image was also printed on thousands of coffee tins which were sold around the world.

Born in 1899, Alice lied about her age to get the job of chauffeur to George Horner, owner of the famous toffee factory, when she was just 16. She later became personal assistant to Mr Horner, who selected her to be the face of Dainty Dinah.

As the town's oldest resident she was asked to lead a Chester-le-Street parade that celebrated the theme of age only last month.

A Chester-le-Street District Council spokeswoman said: "Alice was a lovely lady who had an interesting and fulfilling life. As the face of Dainty Dinah, she left her permanent mark on the history of Chester-le-Street.
