EFFORTS to give children in the north of Hartlepool the best possible start in life have reached a new milestone.
Work is under way to convert a shop in Northgate on the Headland into the first Sure Start centre.
It is expected to open its doors to parents either at the end of this month or in early November and will offer a range of services.
Sure Start North manager, Margaret Holdforth, said: "Although Sure Start North has been up and running for some time now, we have been busy working behind the scenes and laying the foundations to ensure the initiative is a success in the long-term.
"This centre is a major milestone in Sure Start North's development and is a big boost for parents with young children on the Headland.
"We are currently finalising the opening hours of the new centre in consultation with parents. After all, we want to provide a service that best meets their needs."
Sure Start is a Government-funded initiative that involves health, education and social care staff working closely to support parents with children under the age of four.
The centre will provide drop-in facilities for parents and play host to play sessions. Services will also be provided by nursery nurses, family workers, health visitors and speech therapists.
It is intended to establish similar centres at West View and Central Estate within the Sure Start North area.
