JOE FANNING could be all set for his biggest pay day of the season aboard Resplendent Cee (4.15) in the £150,000 Betabet-sponsored two-year-old Trophy at Redcar today.
Fanning's sublime skill-in-saddle is a much-admired amongst the professional ranks, especially his ability to settle horses in order to save a full tank of fuel when maximum throttle is required at the business end of a race.
And in the shape of Resplendent Cee, Joe joins forces with a potentially top-class sprinter judged by the way he powered clear of the very speedy Million Percent in Listed event over six furlongs at Ripon last month.
Trainer Peter Harris has always thought a lot of the Polar Falcon colt, who rather than take on Aidan O'Brien's near invincible team in the premier juvenile Group races at Newmarket, has opted to once again come pot-hunting north in search of today's immensely valuable first prize.
There are plenty of others to consider in a maximum 29-runner field including Paul Cole's Whatcombe raider, Pieter Brueghel, an astonishing ten length scorer at Chester, plus Falcon Hill, the game winner of a valuable Nursery at Newmarket in August.
The unbeaten Advance Party must also enter calculations having come from out of the clouds to claim the St Leger Yearling Stakes at Doncaster.
But the evidence of the clock, combined with sheer potential for further progression, the vote has to go to Resplendent Cee and one of the most quiet, yet popular jockeys in the Weighing Room, Joe Fanning.
*The jumps meeting at Hexham on Saturday, October 13 has been abandoned because of foot-and-mouth restrictions.
It is the second fixture to be lost at the course this month, following the loss of yesterday's card.
The abandonment was made following a new request from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the interests of effective foot-and-mouth control.
Yesterday's scheduled meeting has been replaced by an extra jumps meeting at Sedgefield on Monday.
* On the eve of the 'revolution', William Hill Bookmakers are expecting an immediate increase in betting turnover of at least 20 per cent this weekend as punters grasp the new era of deduction-free betting available to them.
UK betting turnover this weekend is expected to leap from at least £40m to £50m.
