POLICE have compiled a dossier on the effects of alcohol on young people as part of their objections to a town centre pub staying open late.
Flares, in Skinnergate, Darlington, has applied for permission to open until 2am from Wednesday to Saturday, 12.30am on Sunday nights and 2am on Sundays before a Bank Holiday.
Police have voiced concerns about the effect of late-night opening on the quality of life for nearby residents, as well as increasing crime and disorder.
In a letter to the licensing officer, Chief Inspector Barry Knevitt said: "Extending the hours tends to blur the distinction between public houses and nightclubs.
"This results in competition and, as we have recently seen in Darlington, leads to promotions which drive down the price of intoxicating liquor.
"According to several credible research findings, the availability of cheaper intoxicating liquor results in the potential binge drinking of young people and ultimately in the increase of crime and disorder."
Crime figures will be presented to the licensing committee on Wednesday.
