A WILDLIFE garden in Billingham is starting to take shape thanks to local residents and community groups.

Work at Old Billingham wildlife garden will begin to progress over the next few months with a programme of activities to transform the area into a wildlife haven and a focus for community activity.

Pupils from St John's RC Primary School, in the town, will start the autumn transformation by planting more than 100 plants and shrubs to brighten up the winter garden, provide berries for birds and to attract butterflies next summer.

The project got off the ground with funds from Barclays Sitesavers, but the enthusiasm of residents has attracted a further £1,000 grant from the Environmental Landfill Fund.

Jane Dobson, community centre manager, said: "Things have really started to snowball since the project started, it's great to see local enthusiasm grow.

"We have had offers of bricks, plants and other materials from local people.

The garden is becoming a real focus for community activity and learning."

More than 40 plans have now been received from residents and community groups as to how they would like to see the garden look.

The final plans for the garden include a butterfly garden, seating, an arbour, a herb garden, a central water feature and a mini-beast area.

An opportunity for anyone interested to get involved is planned for October 27, with a Barclays Sitesavers Weekend Workout. For more information, contact (01642) 759900.
