EFFORTS to boost tourism in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are being given a kick-start.

The initiative for a new tourism project comes amid a backdrop of long-term decline in visitors to Nidderdale. Levels of self-catering and bed occupancy have dropped from 48 per cent in 1998 to 37 per cent in 1999.

Figures for 2000 were predicted to be lower still and the impact of the foot-and-mouth crisis has depressed numbers of visitors even more.

The scheme includes creating short break theme holidays, providing escorted day visits, promoting walking and mountain biking holidays and attracting new tourist business with an annual events programme.

A project officer will spearhead the aims, working with new and emerging businesses, the community and environmental organisations. The officer will be appointed by Harrogate Borough Council, on behalf of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Advisory Committee (AONB), with contributions from the Countryside Agency and European funding.
