A FOOTBALL team has kicked off its second season in more than two decades in style.

Trials were held earlier this year to establish a squad for the Darlington Primary Schools Town Football Team, which was resurrected after about 25 years last season.

More than 60 youngsters stepped forward for the event and 16 were selected for the squad, which is sponsored by Darlington Borough Council and the Master Skills Sporting Academy.

The team, which plays its home games at Haughton Comprehensive had its first match on Saturday, September 29, at home to Felling, and won 6-0, with goals from three Heathfield Primary School pupils.

Mathew Haymer, Callum Tarren and Stephen Wason scored twice each in the game.

And their second game, on Saturday, saw them beat Middlesbrough FC's Academy team, 4-3, at home.

The Middlesbrough side had only previously been defeated by the academies of Liverpool FC, Everton FC and Leeds United.
