POLICE are appealing for witnesses following the death of a young woman who appeared to fall from a footbridge.
Detectives launched the investigation after being called to the Central Motorway East, in Newcastle, following reports that a woman had fallen in possibly "suspicious circumstances" early yesterday.
The body of the 20-year-old student was recovered from the northbound carriageway, north of New Bridge Street. She was declared dead at the scene.
Police believe the dead woman comes from outside the North-East and her identity was not revealed yesterday while efforts were made to inform relatives.
Detectives have spoken to a group of people who witnessed the incident, some time before 1.40am yesterday.
Detective Superintendent Derek Storey appealed last night to further witnesses to come forward to assist inquiries.
They are asked to contact Newcastle Central CID, on 0191-214 6555, extension 62076
