SMOKED fish and computer chips are providing the ingredients for further growth at Bleiker's Smoke House.

A special computer programme is helping the Glasshouses business, in North Yorkshire, to carry out an in-depth analysis of its operation to enable it to boost profits.

Bleiker's, which sells smoked salmon and other fish and meat products, has received help through Business Link York and North Yorkshire.

A food design programme, run in association with the Design Council, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Food Technopole and Yorkshire pantry, has enabled owners Jane and Jurg Bleiker to obtain assistance from Business Link design advisor Gareth Barber and food industry consultant Mike Dillon Associates, which has provided the computer software.

Thanks to this help, Mr and Mrs Bleiker have gained an insight into modern manufacturing techniques and have produced an action plan for the business.

Mrs Bleiker said: "Over the years we have received help and advice from Business Link York and North Yorkshire on many aspects of business development, and this latest support has proved absolutely essential.

"It has given us a means of introducing a product development strategy based on real facts and figures, rather than our gut feelings.

"With this vital information to hand, we are focusing on the more profitable products and reviewing those that offer less potential."
