EFFORTS to rid the streets of youths indulging in anti-social behaviour has seen one police officer return to school.
Sergeant Phil Kell, from Bishop Auckland police, has visited the town's schools to advise teenagers how to keep out of trouble.
He has spoken to 2,700 pupils, aged between of 11 and 18, at King James 1 Community College, Bishop Barrington Comprehensive School and St John's RC Comprehensive School.
Sgt Kell said: "Now that British Summertime has ended and the evenings are becoming darker earlier, we are taking steps to address the potential problem of youngsters hanging around in large groups making a nuisance of themselves.''
Sgt Kell said officers will also carry out regular checks at shops, particularly those selling alcohol.
He said: "We will take action against youths who are making a nuisance of themselves and have committed offences. I would urge residents who find themselves in a situation where they feel threatened by such behaviour to contact police."
