SAILORS from Richmond's adopted ship failed to find find their land legs in time to beat the town's rugby side at a friendly match organised to coincide with Poppy Day.
HMS Richmond sent a contingent, including captain Alistair Adams, to honour the community's war dead at the weekend. However, there was time for recreation as well, with the ship's crew playing Richmondshire Rugby Club, who ran out victors with the game ending with the score at 38-19.
Speaking afterwards, Lieutenant Commander Steve Sugden said: "It has been a real pleasure to be guests in such a beautiful and friendly town.
"The rugby matches were great fun but, more importantly, it was an honour to take part in the town's Remembrance Parade. We all look forward to our next visit, scheduled for March."
