MORE than one million used stamps have been collected in East Cleveland to help the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Guide dog puppy Tally and her puppy walker Margaret Mableson collected the stamps from the area's main drop-off point, Sotheran's, the Redcar-based stationers.

Used stamps, cut from envelopes, are sold to a specialist firm which packages them for collectors across Europe. A million stamps pays for the basic training of one puppy.

Peter Sotheran, managing director of the family-run firm, said: "We are grateful to all our customers who have sent their used stamps to us. Collecting used stamps is the ultimate in recycling - it costs virtually nothing and the benefits to the Guide Dogs and their owners are tremendous."
