MYSTERY man Brian Healy popped up with a vital goal as Quakers stopped the rot with a 1-0 win over Oxford United at Feethams last Saturday.
The 32-year-old, signed on a short-term contract the day before, made an instant impact after coming on to replace Phil Brumwell early in the second half. Nine minutes later, he arrived in the penalty area to meet a fine cross from the left by Richard Hodgson and place a header into the corner of the net.
One goal proved to be enough for Darlington to record their first win in nine matches, but the real hero was goalkeeper Andy Collett. He was in outstanding form to keep the visitors at bay.
It was a good start for manager Tommy Taylor in his first home game in charge, but he is under no illusions that a lot of hard work needs to be done.
Quakers fans will be hoping his second signing since joining the club - combative left winger Ian Clark - can make a similar impact as his first.
Clark's transfer from arch-rivals Hartlepool United finally went through on Wednesday night after a series of negotiations.
He has signed a two-and-a-half year deal after the clubs agreed a £10,000 fee, rising to £15,000 after 20 appearances.
Saturday's three points moved Darlington up to ninth in the division three table, but their quest to climb higher goes on hold tomorrow when they travel to Kidderminster Harriers in the first round of the FA Cup.
Clark will not be available for that game, but will come into the reckoning for Tuesday night's tough test at home to second-placed Rochdale.
