THE first winners of a new badminton singles league in Darlington received their trophies on Monday.
The Dolphin Centre league, which began in February, is designed to encourage people aged 16 and over to play the sport.
In a very close competition, John Hall from Haughton badminton club won the overall trophy, with Sally Harrison and Scott Iveson winning divisions one and two respectively.
The league, which starts again in January, is keen to recruit non-club players as it caters for recreational participants as well as club and county players.
Sally Harrison said: "The league provides a wonderful opportunity for beginners, improvers and experienced players to get together to play badminton and improve their game.
"I have been playing for 14 years and have never joined a club as I didn't feel confident that I was able to play at that level. I just enjoy playing to keep fit, meet other people and have fun and the Dolphin singles league provides all of that."
