MUSICAL angels is the theme of this year's York Early Music foundation celebrations in December.
The Christmas festival, now in its fourth year, will run from Thursday to Sunday, December 13-16, and includes a whole series of entertainment for visitors and residents.
Highlights include Angel Voices, a concert featuring young people from throughout the region who will work alongside the internationally acclaimed I Fagiolini vocal ensemble (December 13); Wassails and Gingerbread, an illustrated lecture on traditional English Christmas foods presented by Peter Brears (December 15); the King's Consort playing music by Vivaldi and Corelli (December 15); and a foot-tapping entertainment based, The Old Jewish World, comprising Yiddish songs and the haunting melodies of the Hassidim presented by Lucie Skeaping and The Burning Bush (December 16).
Concerts take place in a variety of venues, including the chapter house of York Minster (the Clerk's Group, December 13), St Mary's, Bishophill (Red Byrd, December 15) and the newly-opened national centre for early music (the Mellstock band, December 14).
Running alongside are several events and activities supporting the theme including a pantomime and a collection of metal angels designed by students of York college. For tickets, ring 01904 632220
