RISING costs have forced dentists at Bedale to abandon a plan to convert an empty town centre property into a surgery.

The town council had generally welcomed moves by the Sussex Street practice to take over 29 Market Place, a former shoe shop and bakery widely regarded as the worst of the town's vacant commercial properties because of its boarded up appearance.

In places the covering has been removed and what remains is either damaged or covered in graffiti.

The dental practice wanted to buy the property, the sale depending on planning permission, and use the three floors overlooking the market place. The practice is facing pressure on space at its present premises.

But this week Mr Stephen Simpson, a partner in the practice, said the plan was being dropped because when detailed prices came in it was found that costs would be twice as high as originally envisaged.
