SANTA left his reindeer and sleigh behind when he helped Durham City to launch its Christmas festivities last night.
The most famous Laplander of them all arrived in the city's Market Place in style - in a horse-drawn carriage.
He teamed up with Mayor George Cowper to switch on the lights that bring a festive glow to the city's streets.
Entertainment was provided by the Metro Radio Roadshow and performers including the Phoenix New Orleans Jazz Band and stilt-walkers dressed as Christmas trees.
The city will hold its Christmas festival from November 29, to December 2. Shops and market stalls will open throughout the weekend and there will be a range of entertainment.
There will also be late night Christmas shopping up to 8pm on Thursdays.
Peter Bennion, manager of the Prince Bishops shopping centre, said: "We anticipate this will be our best Christmas yet.'' Details of the city's festivities are available from the Tourist Information Centre, on 0191-384 3720.
