Darlington defender Adam Reed could save boss Tommy Taylor from dipping into the transfer market.
Reed enjoyed a solid performance on his first outing of the season against Oxford last weekend and has made Taylor think again about making a loan move for Newcastle's Gary Caldwell.
Taylor watched Caldwell for Newcastle reserves, but was unable to speak to the Scottish under-21 international while he was on a break in Spain with the Magpies.
Reed made the most of his opportunity in the 1-0 win. "He did well and I'm going to stick with him,'' said Taylor.
Reed, who had been out since April with a knee injury, took over from the dropped Alex Jeannin.
He is adamant that he can only get better after a convincing showing at the heart of the defence.
The 26-year-old centre-back is also hoping that the three points spark an upturn in fortunes for the whole club under Taylor.
"There was more pressure to do well after the last few results and the new manager coming in," said Reed.
"There's still a lot of room for improvement, but now we can try to build on that win."
