PEOPLE in Sunderland could enjoy a warmer winter thanks to energy saving grants.
Sunderland City Council is promoting the grants as part of Warm Homes Week, which starts next Friday.
Warm Front grants of up to £1,000, to pay for things such as improved draught proofing and insulation to reduce their heating bills, are available to householders receiving certain benefits.
Grants of up to £2,000 are available to people aged over 60 on income-related benefits to help pay for fuel-efficient heating.
The awareness week is being run by energy charity NEA and British Gas.
NEA chief executive William Gillis said: "Fuel poverty takes a terrible toll on this country every winter.
"However, people living in Sunderland can alleviate the misery and health problems that result from living in cold, damp homes by taking advantage of a Warm Front grant.''
Paul Blyth, head of policy and client services in the council's social services department, said: "Vulnerable people are at serious risk if they cannot afford to keep their homes properly heated. Helping find ways to keep them warm is a very important part of any care plan.''
