A battling display by Whitby Town earned the club a deserved replay at Home Park - and delighted the 2,000 plus spectators who crammed into The Turnbull Ground on Saturday.
A nervous opening from the home side almost saw the Third Division side take the lead in the first minute through David Friio but the midfielder couldn't find the target with just the keeper to beat.
The Seasiders hit back though and saw efforts from the returning Graham Robinson and Jamie Burt well saved by Plymouth keeper Romain Larrieu.
The pressure eventually paid off just before half time with a superbly worked goal finished by Alex Gildea.
The impressive Burt crossed from the right for Lee Ure to step over leaving Gildea clear to fire home from eight yards.
The home side withstood severe pressure in the second half but the equaliser eventually came in the 72nd minute.
A good break by left-back Jon Beswetherick ended with a shot, which was palmed away Phil Naisbett only for Martin Phillips to fire home ensuring both clubs will be in the hat for Sunday's 2nd round draw.
