SOME of the poorest neighbourhoods around the region are to benefit from new plans launched by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

The plans outline measures to improve local services in the drive to meet targets for change, including better GCSE results and decent social housing.

Regeneration and Neighbourhood Renewal Minister Lord Falconer said: "This is an important step forward. It demonstrates the Government is determined for all sectors to work together to improve the quality of life in our worst-hit areas.

"This is an important milestone but there can be no room for complacency. Deprived communities deserve decent services and a decent chance in life - that goal remains a top priority."

Over three years Derwentside will receive £3.3m, Easington £9.9m, Gateshead £10.4m, Hartlepool £7m, Middlesbrough £11.8m, Newcastle £15.3m, North Tyneside £6.9m, Redcar and Cleveland £7.8m, Sedgefield £2.5m, South Tyneside £12.1m, Stockton £8.6m, Sunderland £16.1m and Wear Valley £3.8m.

John Prescott, Deputy Prime Minister said: "Coordinated and concerted action across government is needed to push forward our neighbourhood renewal agenda - giving people in the most deprived areas a chance to get on in life."
