AN initiative to encourage people to think green has been launched with the help of Pete, Hambleton Council's plastic recycling mascot.

His visit to Northallerton came as the council announced that two plastic recycling banks, one in the town and another in Thirsk, were so popular with residents that emptying rounds had already been increased.

More than four tonnes of plastic rubbish has been picked up in the first eight weeks of the scheme and collections are now being made every seven days.

Pete's visit coincided with the launch of a club to encourage schools to take action over the amount of waste they produce.

The Schools Waste Action Club (SWAC) - a partnership between the London-based charity Waste Watch and Yorventure, which is backed by Northallerton waste management company Yorwaste - has extended its coverage from York into North Yorkshire and urges schools to set up recycling facilities, run workshops and create new community links.

Any schools interested in a visit from a SWAC development worker should contact Katie Wright, on (01609) 761818.
