AUTHORITIES in the region will get more than £1m to improve housing support services for vulnerable people.
The Government announced the boost as part of the Supporting People initiative, aimed at providing high-quality, cost-effective housing-related support services such as wardens for sheltered accommodation.
The money will help local authorities set up the Supporting People programme, due to start in April 2003.
Darlington Borough Council will get £167,602; local authorities in County Durham will get £418,372 between them; Middlesbrough Borough Council has been allocated £192,901; while local authorities in North Yorkshire will share £411,645.
Housing Minister Sally Keeble said: "The Supporting People programme is essential to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
"With these resources, which are considerably more than double those we provided this year, I am confident that local authorities and their partners will be able to deliver a much improved service to those most in need."
