THE police commander of South West Northumberland is retiring after 30 years in the force.
Superintendent Dennis Bolam joined the then Northumberland Constabulary at the age of 25.
During his long career he has worked in both uniform and CID and came top of Northumbria in his sergeant's exam, as well as being among the top 200 in the country, just two years after joining the force.
He went on to become staff officer for the CID head from 1985 to 1990 and then to the Metro Unit, where he was involved in implementing the new department.
Two years later and promoted to inspector, he returned to the fraud squad where many of his investigations were linked to the stock market crash of 1988
