THE RSPCA has launched an investigation after 16 guinea pigs were found crammed in cardboard boxes in a garden.
The animals, ranging from babies to adults, were discovered by a family living at Gilmonby Road, in Middlesbrough, after the boxes were dumped in their back garden.
Chief Inspector Neil Mitchell, who is investigating the case, said: "All the guinea pigs had health problems. They were dreadfully thin and had been living in absolute squalor.
"It would appear somebody has let them breed indiscriminately and then panicked when their numbers got out of control."
The guinea pigs are recovering at the Great Ayton Animal Centre, near Middlesbrough.
