ONE of the North-East's main artery routes is to be made safer thanks to a series of improvements.
Work on a section of the A19 close to Elwick, near Hartlepool, started on Friday and is due to finish by Friday, December 21.
The £88,000 improvement works willinclude upgrades to signing and road markings, and the construction of a junction-splitter island at the junction of the A19 with Church Lane, Elwick. The scheme is designed to cut the number of accidents.
A 40mph speed limit will be in force while work is carried out and there will be lane and central reservation closures, into and out of the junctions with Coal Lane, Church Lane and North Lane, and lane restrictions on the A19 at times.
Karen Sanderson, of the Highways Agency, said: "We would remind road users that accidents, particularly nose-to-tail collisions, occur more often when roadworks are in operation.
"Motorists should stay well behind the vehicle in front, observe all signs, and allow extra time for their journeys."
