A JAZZ band for youngsters in Hartlepool is flying high after gaining a welcome cash boost.
Hartlepool Flamingos have been given an £855 grant to replace worn-out instruments, such as kazoos and a glockenspiel. Some of the cash will also be used to buy new uniforms and help maintain the band's bus.
Set up in 1987, the band helps youngsters to build up musical skills, meet new friends and develop their confidence.
It has more than 20 members in the seven to 16 age group, and performs at fairs and carnivals every Sunday during the summer.
The cash has come from the Owton Rossmere Single Regeneration Budget Partnership's community chest fund, which supports small community initiatives.
Brenda Turner, chairman of the band, said: "This grant is smashing for us. We do our best to raise funds ourselves to meet the costs, but the community chest money gives us a big helping hand, and we're delighted."
