LEISURE facilities in the Hambleton area of North Yorkshire are among the best in the country, according to official inspectors.
The service was awarded top marks following a review by a Government team in a Best Value Inspection.
It was given three stars - the first such rating for cultural services in the North of England and only the third in England and Wales.
The council was praised for operating high-quality, well-maintained and accessible indoor centres providing a range of activities for low charges.
The review highlighted high user numbers, effective consumer consultation and well-trained and motivated staff.
Head of leisure and tourism services Dave Goodwin said: "It is clear recognition for the commitment, expertise and support put in by councillors and employees." Facilities manager Steve Lister praised the work of all those involved.
But he added: "We are also very clear on our need to develop and improve the service in a number of areas. So, despite the praise, it is business as usual."
