Darlington will welcome back Brian Atkinson into the squad when they host York City tomorrow afternoon.

The 30-year-old former Sunderland midfielder came through his second comeback game unscathed during the reserves' 4-0 win over Walsall on Wednesday evening - two weeks after an aborted attempt.

Atkinson was substituted during the second string's win at Shrewsbury earlier this month having felt a slight reaction to the muscle strain .

But he played for an hour on Wednesday and despite seeing a first half penalty saved, will give manager Tommy Taylor another option tomorrow.

But having originally hoped to be fit, Danny Mellanby won't play tomorrow as he's suffered a slight set-back in training as he overcomes a knee injury.

He should play at Alrincham in the FA Cup next week when fellow striker, Barry Conlon will be banned, unless the club's appeal to the FA is successful.

As the scoreline suggest, the reserves won convincingly against a club whose first team play in the First Division and had won six consecutive matches.

Taylor was pleased with the display which mirrored how his first-team strives to perform.

"How they played on Wednesday is how they're told to play in training," said Taylor, who fielded Maddison for 80 minuets as the ex-Middlesbrough schemer recovers from an ankle knock.

"We close people down and once we do get the ball we try to play a bit of football.

"Don't try to be clever at the back, don't play any square balls at the back, hit the forwards early, pick the bits up and get it wide to get crosses in to the box.

"The boy Adam Rundle was excellent in the first half but he was a bit quiet in the second because he took a few knocks and Maddison came through which is good."
